Getting Started

Setup takes just a few minutes. After installing, go to the Settings page where you'll find a step-by-step guide. Set your global margin threshold (e.g., 20%), then add COGS (Cost of Goods Sold) data for your products. The Margin Health Dashboard will show your protection coverage as you go.

COGS stands for Cost of Goods Sold—the total cost to produce or purchase a product, including materials, labor, and shipping. The app needs this to calculate your actual profit margin on each product and determine whether a discount would make the sale unprofitable.

Products without COGS data won't be protected by the margin guard. We recommend starting with your best-sellers or highest-risk items first. The dashboard shows which products still need COGS data so you can track your progress.

How It Works

When a customer tries to use a discount code that would push margins below your threshold, the app blocks it at checkout and shows a customizable error message. If you've enabled backup discount codes, the customer will also see a safe alternative discount they can use instead.

Yes! You can set a global threshold that applies to all products by default, then override it for specific products. For example, set 20% globally but require 35% for premium items and allow 10% for clearance products.

Exempt products bypass margin checking entirely. This is perfect for loss leaders, promotional items, or gift-with-purchase products that you intentionally sell at low or no margin to attract customers.

The app validates discount codes at checkout. Automatic discounts set up through Shopify are applied before our validation, so you'll want to ensure your automatic discounts are already set at safe levels when you create them.

Data & Privacy

All your data is stored in Shopify's native metafield system—meaning it lives in your Shopify store, not in an external database. This gives you full ownership of your data and means there's no vendor lock-in.

Your COGS data and settings remain in your Shopify store as metafields. If you reinstall the app later, all your data will still be there. You can also access this data through Shopify's admin or other apps that read metafields.

Planning & Analytics

The calculator lets you test discount scenarios before launching promotions. Enter a discount percentage and instantly see which products can handle it, which are at risk, and the maximum safe discount for any item. Plan your sales with confidence.

The dashboard gives you an at-a-glance view of your store's margin protection status: how many products are protected, which products are at risk of being blocked, which are safe, and which are exempt. It also shows products that still need COGS data.

Yes! In Settings, you can enable Shopify Fee Integration and set your transaction fee percentage (default 2.9%). The app will factor this into all margin calculations so you're protecting your real-world profit, not just gross margin.
